DISCOVER Z19O

April 19 @ 15:00 - 18:00

Established in the mid-1970s during the Lebanese Civil War, Hamat Air Base (Z19O), originally known as Pierre Gemayel International Airport, was initially planned as a dual-use facility serving both civilian and military aviation. However, due to the conflict and shifting strategic priorities, it never opened to commercial traffic and was instead developed into a military installation. During the war, the base came under Syrian control and was mainly used for helicopter operations before being returned to the Lebanese Armed Forces in 2005.

Today, Hamat operates as a key Lebanese Air Force base, hosting aircraft such as the A-29 Super Tucano and MD-530F Defender, widely used for light attack, reconnaissance, and counter-insurgency missions. The airbase also supports frequent helicopter activity and is capable of accommodating tactical transport aircraft, including the C-130 Hercules and even larger platforms such as the C-17 Globemaster III under suitable conditions.

Located on a coastal plateau overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, Hamat features a runway of approximately 1,800 meters, offering a unique and sometimes challenging operating environment. Terrain, coastal winds, and visual illusions — particularly with the runway ending near a cliff — require precise handling and good situational awareness, especially during approach and departure phases.

Combining turboprop military aviation, rotary-wing operations, and occasional heavy transport movements, Hamat provides a distinctive setting for tactical flying. For this event, pilots can expect a dynamic experience blending precision, realism, and the unique character of one of Lebanon’s most iconic military airfields.
